Tamba ware with 引き出し’HIKIDASHI’

Yasuo SASAKI, a potter, has kept the fire of his kiln going in Fujigawa even during the New Year’s Holidays. In other words, even for 7 days between December 26th and January 2nd.

On New Year’s Eve, I got contacted by him. What he said was he wanted to get out a tea bowl which was visible through the window of his kiln and put it in the water. This technique is called ‘HIKIDASHI’ and it means that red hot works are taken from a kiln and put them in the water with no hesitating.

I’ve made tea bowls called ‘HIKIDASHI GURO’ with the same technique before, but they weren’t Tamba ware.

He said “There were three possibilities: twisted, broken, added a unique touch. I won’t know until I try.”

When viewed through the window of the kiln, the tea bowl was placed on the left side of 2nd shelf from the top.

I said I was leaving this to you and waiting for good news.

A photo I had received after tried showed Tamba ware were covered ineffable Vidro Glaze with ‘HIKIDASHI’.

I’ve felt it is probably an absolute gem.

I’m receiving it around January 10th.

As always, pottery makes my heart jump and I believe this feeling has been an beautiful custom fostered by our ancestor since the Jomon Era.

I think I should make a suitable tea scoop to use it and that bowl at Spring tea gathering.

Well, I’ll call the bowl ‘ときめき(TOKIMEKI)’.

I appreciate my pottery pals have kept the fire going during every hour of the day and night in New Year’s Holidays.

Thank you SASAKI-san and ICHIKAWA-kun!
